#1451 - Adobe Interview Puzzle IPL

The IPL (Indian Premier League) is about to start. A total of nine teams are participating in the league. As per the game play, each team will have to play two matches with every other team and then the top four teams are to be qualified for the playoffs.

Can you identify the minimum wins required for any team to ensure a place in the playoffs?

Adobe Interview Puzzle IPL

Total number of matches that are to be played are:
9C2 * 2
= 9! / (2!7!) * 2
= 8 * 9
= 72
And thus each team will play 16 matches.

Now let us examine the possible cases.

Case 1:
If suppose, Team A, Team B and Team C wins 14 matches each i.e. they lose 1 match each from the other two teams, then the Team D can win only 16 - 3 * 2 = 10 matches.

Case 2:
Now let us suppose if the top four teams win 13 matches each.
Team A: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team B, Team C and Team D.
Team B: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team C and Team D.
Team C: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B and Team D.
Team D: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B and Team C.

In this case, the Team E can only win a maximum of 8 matches as Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D will win all the matches played by E.

Case 3:
If suppose the top five team wins 12 matches each.
Team A: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team B, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team B: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team C: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team D and Team E.
Team D: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team E.
Team E: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D.

Now Team E wins 12 matches but it still won't be able to qualify for the playoffs (assuming that it has the lowest run rate).

Therefore from case 2, it can be said that a team must win at least 13 matches to be sure to play in the playoffs.

#1452 - Missing Number Puzzle

Find the missing number in the given picture puzzle.

Missing Number Puzzle

Both 0 and 16 will suffice the missing number.

This is because, there is no specific pattern in this picture. The only thing that you will notice is that the numbers are continuous and jumbled up.
Thus the number can be 0 or 16.

#1453 - Goldman Sachs Interview Puzzle

You have a thousand Re. 1 coins with you. You have ten bags with you and you can put any number of coins in each of the bags. The condition is that if someone asks you for any amount between 1 and 1000, you must be able to give that amount by just giving the bag (you are not allowed to open the bag and give coins).

How will you do it ?

Goldman Sachs Interview Puzzle

First Bag = 1 Coin
Second Bag = 2 Coins
Third Bag = 4 Coins
Fourth Bag = 8 Coins
Fifth Bag = 16 Coins
Sixth Bag = 32 Coins
Seventh Bag = 64 Coins
Eighth Bag = 128 Coins
Ninth Bag = 256 Coins
Tenth Bag = Remaining Coins.

Now think of any amount between 1 and 1000 and you will be able to give it by using bags (without opening them)

#1454 - Count The Squares Puzzle

Can you find out the number of squares in the given picture?

Count The Squares Puzzle

There are 12 squares in the picture.

The trick to find it would be drawing diagonals. We know that the sides of a square are parallel and thus, the diagonals should be parallel as well. Let us begin with the outer most rectangle. See the picture. The yellow lines are diagonals drawn for reference.

You can make out four squares in the image.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lTktLIzp260/U2_Yh67sYFI/AAAAAAAAC68/JHsFRRPVhMs/s1600/how-many-squares-puzzle-solution-2.png

Now see the next image. You can make out a total of 8 squares - 3 blue, 3 green and 2 red. There are 4 other rectangles in the figure but they cant be square as their diagonal is not parallel with the yellow lines we drew for reference.

Thus, total squares = 4 + 8 = 12.

#1455 - Classic Riddle

Three people check into a hotel. They pay $60 as the rent of the room. After they check-in, the manager realize that the rent for the room is $55. So, he gives $5 to the bellboy and asks him to give it to them. The bellboy thinks that it will be difficult for the three people to share $5 among them and seeking the personal benefit, he pockets $2 and gives the remaining $3 to them.

Now, each person paid $20 and got back $1. In this manner, each of them paid just $19 which totals to the amount of $57. The bellboy has $2 with him and adding them, we get $59. So where is the remaining $1?

Classic Riddle

This is a classic riddle. The trick is to be careful how you are adding things. They paid $60 originally and received back $3. So in this manner, they have paid just $57 for the rent. Out of this $57, $55 are with the manager and $2 are with the bellboy.

#1456 - Flipkart Interview Puzzle

You and your two friends are working in a multinational company. How can you three find out the average salary of you all without disclosing your own salary to the other two ?

Flipkart Interview Puzzle

Let us say that the three people are A, B and C respectively. Now you, A will tell the sum of your salary and a random number to B.
SA (Actual Salary) + A (random number of A)

In the same manner your friend B, will add his salary with a random number to the amount given by A (you) and will pass it to C.
(SA + A) + (SB + B)

C will do the same.
(SA + A) + (SB + B) + (SC + C)

Now C will pass this total amount to A. He will subtract his random number from the amount and it will become:
(SA) + (SB + B) + (SC + C)

Then he will pass it to B and B will subtract his random number from the amount.
(SA) + (SB) + (SC + C)

Then he will pass this to C who will subtract his random number.
(SA) + (SB) + (SC)

Now C has the total amount of their combined salaries. He will tell the amount to all of you and you can easily divide it by 3 to get the average salary.

#1460 - Maths With Fun Puzzle

See the given picture. Can you find out the combined weight of Cat, Dog and Rabbit?

Maths With Fun Puzzle

Let us use equations to solve this puzzle.

Rabbit + Cat = 10 Kg ---- Eq. 1
Dog + Rabbit = 20 Kg ---- Eq. 2
Cat + Dog = 24 Kg ---- Eq. 3

Now add all the three equations

2(Cat) + 2(Dog) + 2(Rabbit) = 10 + 24 + 24
2 (Cat + Dog + Rabbit) = 54
Cat + Dog + Rabbit = 27.
