#311 - Tic Tac Toe Riddle

This is basically a game of Tic-Tac-Toe which you all might have played innumerable times. Here, we are playing with the black and white markers instead. Also, there is a bit change to the rules. The changed rules allows you to play just three times. After the three markers are put by each of the players, you can only slide your marker into an empty square that shares a common wall with the square that the marker is leaving. You can refer to the figure given. If this is the position of the game, the white's next move would be from 6 to 3. Now, whatever the black does, the white one will move his marker from 5 to 2 and he will have a three in a row. What you have to decide is if both of the players are using a perfect strategy, will the white player (who plays first) always win? Or it will be the black one who will win always? Or every game will be a draw?

Tic Tac Toe Riddle

Let us try and make the white win when black's first move is to a non-corner square. White begins at 5 and black places its first marker at 2. White puts at 9 and black puts at 1. White plays at 3. Now if black puts at 7 to block, white will move from 5 to 6 and will win. But in this game, black can only play his last marker at 6. White can't win on the next move as his market at square 9 won't be able to get to square 7 in a single move. But white cam get to square 7 before black can block him or win. White will move from 8 to 7 to win the game. Thus, white can always force a win if he starts from the center of the square.

#313 - Brainy Game Question

You are playing a game with your friend Jack. There are digits from 1 to 9. You both will take turn erasing one digit and adding it to your score. The first one to score 15 points will win the game.

Would you want to play first or second?
PS: The sum should be exactly 15.

Brainy Game Question

Suppose you are player 1 and your friend is player 2.
You pick up 9, then your friend will choose 8.
Now you won’t be able to pick up 7 as then your sum will be more than 15 which will make you lose. But then your friend will pick 8 and will win.

Thus you will start by picking 1. If your friend picks up 2, then you will pick 3 and your friend will pick 4. Now this will force you to pick 9. The score now becomes 6 to 13 and you have no chance of winning. Thus you pick up 9 after your friend picks up 2. Then the player 2 will pick 8. The score will now be 10 to 10. Thus you pick the number 3 as picking 7 will throw him over 15. Your friend will pick 4. Now you will have no move, thus your friend will win. So it will be wise to play second.

#314 - Flipkart Interview Puzzle

You and your two friends are working in a multinational company. How can you three find out the average salary of you all without disclosing your own salary to the other two ?

Flipkart Interview Puzzle

Let us say that the three people are A, B and C respectively. Now you, A will tell the sum of your salary and a random number to B.
SA (Actual Salary) + A (random number of A)

In the same manner your friend B, will add his salary with a random number to the amount given by A (you) and will pass it to C.
(SA + A) + (SB + B)

C will do the same.
(SA + A) + (SB + B) + (SC + C)

Now C will pass this total amount to A. He will subtract his random number from the amount and it will become:
(SA) + (SB + B) + (SC + C)

Then he will pass it to B and B will subtract his random number from the amount.
(SA) + (SB) + (SC + C)

Then he will pass this to C who will subtract his random number.
(SA) + (SB) + (SC)

Now C has the total amount of their combined salaries. He will tell the amount to all of you and you can easily divide it by 3 to get the average salary.

Fourth Bag = 8 Coins
Fifth Bag = 16 Coins
Sixth Bag = 32 Coins
Seventh Bag = 64 Coins
Eighth Bag = 128 Coins
Ninth Bag = 256 Coins
Tenth Bag = Remaining Coins.

Now think of any amount between 1 and 1000 and you will be able to give it by using bags (without opening them)

#316 - Adobe Interview Puzzle IPL

The IPL (Indian Premier League) is about to start. A total of nine teams are participating in the league. As per the game play, each team will have to play two matches with every other team and then the top four teams are to be qualified for the playoffs.

Can you identify the minimum wins required for any team to ensure a place in the playoffs?

Adobe Interview Puzzle IPL

Total number of matches that are to be played are:
9C2 * 2
= 9! / (2!7!) * 2
= 8 * 9
= 72
And thus each team will play 16 matches.

Now let us examine the possible cases.

Case 1:
If suppose, Team A, Team B and Team C wins 14 matches each i.e. they lose 1 match each from the other two teams, then the Team D can win only 16 - 3 * 2 = 10 matches.

Case 2:
Now let us suppose if the top four teams win 13 matches each.
Team A: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team B, Team C and Team D.
Team B: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team C and Team D.
Team C: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B and Team D.
Team D: 13 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B and Team C.

In this case, the Team E can only win a maximum of 8 matches as Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D will win all the matches played by E.

Case 3:
If suppose the top five team wins 12 matches each.
Team A: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team B, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team B: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team C: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team D and Team E.
Team D: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team E.
Team E: 12 wins and 3 loses from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D.

Now Team E wins 12 matches but it still won't be able to qualify for the playoffs (assuming that it has the lowest run rate).

Therefore from case 2, it can be said that a team must win at least 13 matches to be sure to play in the playoffs.

#317 - Hard Mathematical Logic Puzzle

A devotee visits 9 temples when he visits India. All these nine temples have one thing in common - there are 100 steps in every temple. The devotee puts Re.1 coin after climbing up every step. He does the same while climbing down every step. At each temple, the devotee offers half of his money from his pocket to god. In this way, his pocket becomes empty after his visit to 9th temple.

Can you calculate the total amount he had initially ?

Hard Mathematical Logic Puzzle

146900

In such cases, we calculate from the last thing. Thus in this case, let us start counting from the 9th temple. Since, he must have offered 100 coins while climbing down stairs, it means that he must have offered Rs. 100 to god on the ninth temple and offered Rs. 100 while climbing up steps. Thus it is clear that he had Rs. 300 in his pocket before climbing the steps of the 9th temple.

Similarly, we will calculate for all the temples backwards.
Before eight temple: (300+100)*2 + 100 = 900
Before seventh temple: (900+100)*2 + 100 = 2100
Before Sixth temple: (2100+100)*2 + 100 = 4300
Before fifth temple: (4300+100)*2 + 100 = 8900
Before fourth temple: (8900+100)*2 + 100 = 18100
Before third temple: (18100+100)*2 + 100 = 36,500
Before second temple: (36500+100)*2 + 100 = 73300
Before first temple: (73300+100)*2 + 100 = 146900

Therefore he had Rs. 146900 initially.
